This Is My Brain on Calculus
Sometimes I awaken in the morning thinking about work. Sometimes I awaken thinking about sex. Sometimes I awaken thinking about Magic: the Gathering. Lately, I've been waking up with calculus problems on my mind. (Yeah, for those of you not paying attention, I'm back in school, pursuing a Mathematics degree.)

Last night, I peeled a couple of bananas and tossed them into a blender. I added four ice cubes, 2 cups of Bailey's Irish Creme, and a dash of mace. All of this blended up into a rich, frothy concoction. The lovely and talented [info]beckyzoole tasted it and said, "This is pretty good. What do you call it?"

Without thinking, I said, "Put it in a cylindrical glass, and we'll call it Banana Cream Pie R Squared H."

**********************************

I didn't claim that it was funny. It's just the way my brain works, okay?

Nice!

What focus are you pursuing in math?

For now, just a BS in Mathematics. I suspect that specialization would happen at the graduate level, but the Master's degree will have to be an MBA.

You see, eventually I will have to retire from the Best Job in the World (TM), and I'll want to get consulting gigs to earn a living. MBA's won't pay me to give them advice if I don't also have an MBA -- even if I do have useful knowledge and skills to contribute. (I know that this is true... for if it were not true, the MBAs would listen to me now, when they could do it for free.)

They will also listen if you are more than 100 miles from home, with a briefcase. Then you will be an expert.

Even at the BS level, there are several choices in electives. I chose Fourier decomposition and Differential Equations as the elective types. (About eight classes beyond the required basics.) I chose those because of interest and applicability to the Electrical Engineering courses I was interested in. The graduate level math courses I took as a EE sophomore finally convinced me that I would need to actually learn to study. I passed. ('C's get degrees.) Complex Analysis is far simpler than it looks like it should be, and you learn cool stuff, like the arcsine(2).
