The Republican national convention is over. I don't have much to say about it, because in the final analysis, not much was said DURING the convention.

At a convention in which President Bush was barely mentioned, Mr. McCain paid only the most fleeting tribute to him, not even using his name. “I’m grateful to the president for leading us in those dark days following the worst attack on American soil in our history, and keeping us safe from another attack many thought was inevitable,” he said at the opening of his speech.

To Mr McCain, however, I would like to say one word: Vicksburg.

Not much is said during conventions anymore. The problem is that the nominee is decided by the time the convention takes place. The convention is no longer a place for people to decide who best represents them on the issues, it is a coronation of the designated standard bearer. Nothing but platitudes need be spoken, the contest is already over. (Please note: I did not specify republican or democrat.)

Was Vicksburg the worst attack on American soil? Hmmm. If you count the entire siege, start to finish, it was. Gettysburg, I think, was a bloodier single battle. The burning of Atlanta caused the most widespread destruction and civilian suffering.

But as a single attack, Pearl Harbor was certainly the worst. Yes, "only" 2403 American soldiers, sailors and civilians died at Pearl Harbor, less than the 2751 that died in the 9/11 attack. But the attack on Pearl Harbor crippled our military forces as well. The ships, aircraft, and infrastructure destroyed that day required incredible effort and sacrifice, on the part of the whole nation, to rebuild as quickly as possible.

It really bothers me that McCain, who remembers listening to the live radio reports about the Pearl Harbor attack, would overlook it.
